1. 1. Welcome to EDIEHello, I am EDIE, the empath. I listen, check in on how you are doing and coach you through pressure, adapting my tone and pace to suit you. You can talk with me out loud through the live avatar, or type if that feels easier. Let me first show you how to get your microphone and sound ready.
2. 2. Hardware you needBefore you start a live conversation, check your equipment. EDIE needs a working microphone so your voice can be heard, and speakers or headphones so you can hear the reply. A headset with a built-in microphone is the easiest option and cuts out echo. A camera is never required: EDIE does not need to see you. On a phone or tablet, take it off silent mode and turn the volume up, because a muted device silences the avatar as well.
3. 3. Software and permissionsNow the software. Use an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox browser — nothing to install. When you start the live conversation your browser asks for permission to use the microphone: choose Allow. If you blocked it before, open the padlock or settings icon in the address bar and set the microphone back to Allow, then reload the page. Check the browser tab is not muted, close other apps that hold the microphone, such as a video call, and if you are on a work or school network ask for the site to be permitted.
4. 4. Test before you talkOn the page itself there is a check called Microphone and speaker check. Choose Test my microphone and speak a few words: a level bar moves as it hears you. Then choose Play test sound to confirm your speakers work. When both pass, start the live conversation and simply talk — pause when you finish speaking and EDIE replies.
5. 5. If audio is not for youIf speaking is difficult, or you have no microphone, type to me in the chat beside the avatar — the support is the same. Captions and transcripts come with every spoken clip, and a written summary explains what I cover, so nothing relies on sound.
